Mkomazi is vital refuge for two highly endangered species, the charismatic black rhino and sociable African wild dog, both of which were successfully reintroduced in the 1990s. Nomadic by nature, wild dog might be seen almost anywhere in the park, but black rhino are restricted to a fenced sanctuary, ensuring their safe keeping for future generations enjoyment and prosperity.

DAY 4+6:  USAMBARA MOUNTAINS

The Usambara`s are a part of the ancient Eastern Arc chain which mountains stretch in a broken crescent from the Taita hills in southern Kenya down to Morogoro and the southern highlands. They are estimated to be at least 100 million years old and the rocks forming them may be as much as 600 million years old. The mountains are home to an exceptional assortment of plants and animals and represent one of the highest degrees of biodiversity on the continent

Wildlife to be seen includes the elegant Colobus monkey, blue monkeys and a wide variety of birds. In the rain forest euphorbias, acacias, giant ferns, palms, lobelias, camphors (Japanese and Usumbaru) eucalyptus and fig trees are all to be found.  Lengths of walks can be varied from just an hour or so to all day long taking a packed lunch with you. To be able to see something of the region it is best to spend at least two nights in the area.

Amani nature Reserve: was established to maintain biodiversity, genetic resources, natural processes and cultural values in an undisturbed, dynamic and evolutionary state in order to have an ecologically representative example of the Eastern Arc forest ecosystem available for present and future generations, scientific study, environmental monitoring, education, and sustainable and controlled local and recreational use

DAY 7+11:  PANGANI BEACH AND AMBONI CAVES

Tanzania`s brilliant white beaches lapped by the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean to provide the perfect place to relax, soak up the sun and have that dream break from everything else….
At Pangani Golf and Beach Resort, wilderness meets the sea and the ocean itself holds a world of spectacular natural paradise teeming with life and splendor.

Temparatures range between 24°C and 32°C in summer (November to March) and are only slightly lower during the rest of the year. The main rainy season is in April/May

Amboni Caves: are the most extensive limestone caves in East Africa. The caves were formed during the Jurassic Period, over 150 million years ago, and lie mostly underground.

There are ten caves systems in total, although only one is used for guided tours. The Amboni Caves are home to thousands of bats and their exit at sunset each evening is a popular event. The caves are also believed to house various spirits and they hold great religious significance for many of the local tribes. A ceremonial cavern is located within the Amboni Caves, filled with offerings like obsidian blades and pottery. Fertility offerings are also made at one of the shrines.

DAY 12+14:  SAADANI NATIONA PARK-

Palm trees sway in a cooling oceanic breeze. White sand and blue water sparkle alluringly beneath the tropical sun. Traditional dhows sail slowly past, propelled by billowing white sails, while Swahili fishermen cast their nets below a brilliant red sunrise. Saadani is where the beach meets the bush. The only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa to boast an Indian Ocean beachfront, it possesses all the attributes that make Tanzania’s tropical coastline and islands so popular with European sun-worshippers. Yet it is also the one place where those idle hours of sunbathing might be interrupted by an elephant strolling past, or a lion coming to drink at the nearby waterhole!

Accommodations Options:

The Tides Beach Hotel (Pangani): The cottages at The Tides are situated on the beach. They are situated in a tropical setting surrounded by palms. Each cottage has its own private sunbathing area. Snorkel or scuba dive on the pristine coral reefs of the Maziwe Island Marine Reserve.  Swimming, sailing, fishing, or kayaking are some of the activities available.

Ushongo Beach Cottages(Ushongo Pangani): Is one of the little known secrets of the Tanzania coast. It is quiet, has a beautiful white sandy beach fringed by coconut palms, and generally is an ideal place in which to relax. For families, it is an idealic spot for prime time with children. The bay has no undercurrents, no big breakers, no sharks, no hawkers and no crime. The beach is protected by three reefs, the furthest one with excellent snorkeling and scuba diving.

A tent with A view (Saadani): Beautifully designed accommodation, miles of untouched fine white sandy beaches and the knowledge that elephants may have knocked down the coconut trees behind your rooms during the night ensure an experience that you will not find anywhere else.

Comments from Lonely Planet “For a secluded tropical getaway, this wonderful and recommended luxury camp is the place to come, with raised tree house-style bandas tucked away among the coconut groves just outside the park`s northern boundary on a lovely stretch of deserted, driftwood-strewn beach. The well-spaced bandas - all with verandas and hammocks - are directly on the beach and reached by soft sand paths”

Babu’s Camp (Mkomazi): This classic safari-style camp is reason enough in itself to visit Mkomazi. It has just five tents, all well spaced and set amid baobabs and thorn acacias in the northern part of the reserve looking towards the Gulela Hills. The cuisine is wonderful, staff attentive and the entire ambience, together with the evocative surrounding landscapes, recalls quintessential East Africa.

Irente View Cliff Lodge(Usambara Mountains):  situated right at the famous Irente View point.

Designed with comfortability and quality in mind, all rooms have a private balcony with panoramic view in all directions. Accommodation consists of 2 suites each with mini-bar and superior private balcony facing the rocks scenery and other 14 rooms including superior and standard rooms with single and double beds.
